A beginner’s mind is just that, the ability to have fresh eyes on whatever is here in this moment. To accept that making a mistake isn’t a failure, it’s an opportunity to begin again. Taking what comes at you with an open mind, one that doesn’t already have an answer. It’s like when we were kids. We were open to exploring; the curiosity was palpable. When we get older and “wiser,” we lose that desire to dig in, be mesmerized, and understand deeply.
Suzuki said: “In the beginner’s mind, there are many possibilities, but in the expert’s mind, there are few.”
When we are in beginner's mind, we are never done exploring, we are more creative, more aware, more compassionate, and more grateful, and a sense of wonder comes easily.
That’s the beauty of taking things small. Not rushing but being present, listening and learning about the world and especially ourselves. Bring your beginner’s mind to life through tiny moments of awareness.
